A Review of Wes Anderson’s The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)

Warning: Minor Spoilers

The Royal Tenenbaums is a movie made by Wes Anderson. The Royal Tenenbaums has the best ensemble cast of characters out of any other Wes Anderson movie. These characters include:

🏋🏻Ben Stiller starring as a P90X Ben Stiller, Chas Tenenbaum.

🎭 Gwyneth Paltrow starring as the emo, gloomy, adopted, 9-fingered brotherf*****, Margot Tenenbaum.

🦅 Luke Wilson starring as the concealed hipster, once-athletic sisterf*****, Richie Tenenbaum.

🤠 Owen Wilson starring as the cleanest looking hardcore, celebrity druggie of all-time, Eli Cash.

📞 Bill Murray starring as…Bill Murray.

🤵🏾 Danny Glover starring as a happier version of himself, Henry Sherman.

👜 Angelica Huston starring as modern-day Meryl Streep, Etheline Tenenbaum.

🍸 and Gene Hackman starring as Royal Tenenbaum, the perfect illustration of an elderly asshole (and personally, my favorite character in this entire film).

The Royal Tenenbaums additionally includes special attributes. Here are some of those special attributes

🗣 Fancy narration.

🖕🏻 Daddy issues.

💝 Cute, heartfelt family motifs.

🤣 Laugh-out-loud humor that you shouldn’t be laughing out loud at unless you want to go to hell. It’s worth it though.

⁉️ An incestuous but “technically” not incestuous love story.

🙌🏻 Go-to framing for people with OCD.

📽 A predictable and familiar but somehow, forgiving and gratifying narrative arc.

Wes Anderson makes delightful movies. The Royal Tenenbaums is a delightful movie.

Verdict: B+
