Hellboy accommodates a distinct trait that I’ve missed so dearly in the superhero genre: creative worldbuilding. Director Guillermo del Toro injects eye-catching set pieces, fetching costumes, and some fascinating practical effects to bring this universe to life. Ron Perlman’s charming performance as Hellboy also doesn’t help make this movie any less of a bizarrely memorable fantasy adventure.
