Review of the Theatrical Cut
Terrence Malick basically just saw the 1o-minute-long Stargate sequence from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey and was like, “Fuck it, let me recreate that scene for the opening of my film!”
God-like score/soundtrack. Masterful directing. Entrancing editing. Genuinely, the prettiest movie I’ve ever laid my eyes upon. Wish its ambitions and ideas on existentialism weren’t so rudimentary and cribbed though. The unique experience that Malick brings to the table, however, is worth the watch alone. Although, it did slightly remind me of a less subtle version of Andrei Tarkovsky’s The Mirror.
Clearly, there weren’t enough dinosaurs in this, as well. Tsk tsk, Malick.
Verdict: ?
