I don’t quite grasp the hype behind this one. Sure, some of the gruesome visuals and editing techniques are imposing and formidable, but the story at hand was tentative. Clearly, Candyman was going for an unexpected spin on the cheesy slasher narrative, but it feels more like a failed attempt at being some celestial cinematic project when, at its core, it’s just the byproduct of your run-of-the-mill, person-gone-crazy horror feature.
With that being said, I am still very intrigued to see Nia DaCosta and Jordan Peele’s “spiritual” sequel to the cult phenomena.
Verdict: C+
“Candyman” is now available to stream on Vudu, YouTube, Amazon Prime, Google Play, and Netflix.
