Björk being in an art-form that doesn’t feature sex is just flat-out weird. It is, however, nice to see her take on a more family-friendly, wholesome project for a change…

Quiet, patient, and soothing to look at, The Juniper Tree is… kind of boring? I like Björk of course (even if she fancies talking to rocks occasionally) and I can appreciate the goodwill in spiritual, folk-tale indie movies such as this, but there’s not a whole lot to this small motion picture that other films haven’t done or said considerably better.
The third act does randomly get f’ed up and all David-Lynch-y, howbeit. Plus this is a solid background movie! Pretty, pretty!
Verdict: C+
“The Juniper Tree” is now available to stream on Kanopy and The Criterion Channel.
