Quick-Thoughts: Céline Sciamma’s Tomboy (2011)

The Paris Project meets Portrait of a Girl on a Journey to Distinguish Herself.

While blatantly surface-level in substance, Tomboy plays out much more as a visual observation of its modest themes than one that attempts to delve past the fundamentals of them, which is totally acceptable! Its presentation of what the early stages of gender identification may be like and how children could interpret it amongst a toxic society feels very authentic.

But, a Wilhelm scream? Really, Céline?

Verdict: B-

“Tomboy” is now available to stream on YouTube, Google Play, Amazon Prime, Vudu, and iTunes.
