Quick-Thoughts: David Cronenberg’s Shivers (1975)

Lesson learned: NEVER give a mad college professing scientist who also happens to be a pedophile a copy of Brave New World.

Prime example of an interesting concept executed with mere weight to its actual hypothesis. Shivers poses the notion that humanity is too complicated and free-thinking of a creature to enjoy sex in its full and utilizes the inception of a rape-driven zombie apocalypse to represent the opposition of that ideology. Truth is though, that’s pretty much all it is, a stereotypically nauseating but maybe slightly better-than-average-looking zombie apocalypse movie trapped inside a thoughtful David Cronenberg aim which fails to inflate its poignancy — two random monologues isn’t enough, Dave!

For a directorial debut, however, this must’ve gone to show that the dude wasn’t just someone seeking to make money off of gratuitous cheese, he was in it to push the genre forward. Wait until we get to the 80s!

Verdict: C+
