Quick-Thoughts: Singin’ in the Rain (1952)

Kathy is basically just me and every other supposedly tenacious, Criterion-loving art student in college right now. We’ll all buy into our pretentiousness until some sexy Gene-Kelly-lookin’ fella personally tells us otherwise…

Well, La La Land is forever ruined for me. Singin’ in the Rain essentially accomplishes what that movie did except it was committed more than 60 years ago and has a SLIGHTLY more conscious awareness of the phony industry they’re exploring and the notorious celebrities that complete it, while, howbeit, rudimentary at this point and taken light-heartedly for the sake of its soft tone. I love how the camera though is almost entirely in-sync with the bubbly characters throughout the picture, not to mention how skittle-popping the sweep of its grand set-designs and transitions are; it’s all far ahead stuff for 1952! Catchy songs don’t hurt it either!

Verdict: B

“Singin’ in the Rain” is now available to stream on HBO Max.
