Screened at The Frida Cinema
I appreciate how The Innkeepers is almost more so a hangout movie about amateur paranormal investigators that’s also strangely a mild coming-of-age themed story rather than just a straight shooting horror flick — as always, Ti West’s quirky character humor is something unprecedented in most horror and whole-heartedly welcomed by mwah — but *yikes* is the sudden ambiguity of the third act plied to inspire lingering fear in the audience just such an ineffective cop-out of a conclusion; it’s semi-satisfying that the “Everything happens for a reason, Claire. Nobody just ends up at the Yankee Pedlar.” line comes back to haunt the audience with the construct of “predestination” nevertheless, but aside from that, even the scares during this climax appear so slopped together and limited on West’s usually sharp methodology to them.
Oh yeah, and what’s with the use of pathos here too Mr. West? You trying to make a Lifetime original or something? Y’all did Luke dirty.
Verdict: C
