Screened at Harkins
I guess the toy models and set pieces in this OG King Kong vs. Godzilla were occasionally admirable (extra points for that poor real-life octopus) and the abominable English dubbing actually made the over-the-top performances significantly more entertaining to endure. I understand that this movie is meant to be a comedy, but it’s not anything particularly funny as it is just unintentionally; its totality is about as cleverly meta as that “POV: You are the Meme”… meme. I also don’t know why they decided to compose a third of this movie with lifeless news memos and interviews, as if we actually care to be in tune with the logistics of the situation. The thematics of the film aren’t even interesting too, especially considering they’re just cliff-note recites from Ishirō Honda’s 1954 original. The actual Kong and Godzilla battle was pretty 🤷♂️, not to mention it ended quite pathetically.
If this sort of stuff is your jazz though, I get it, but this 91 minute movie felt like an eternity to me.
Verdict: D+
