Quick-Thoughts: I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)

Would’ve given this a perfect 5/5 if they killed off Barry before we at least made it past the 10 minute mark.

What a wonderfully potential-filled and engaging inciting incident that only exists to be completely wasted from there on forward by the lowest quality of slasher formula one can submit to that secondly can’t even offer a single good kill throughout its entire 100-minute runtime. Jim Gillespie might whip pan or tilt and dolly in fast like there should be a reason for this story to be stimulating, but it’s barely bugging the impetus any faster. I Know What You Did Last Summer may deal in exhibiting the shame and self-destruction found in committing an accidental and possibly even concealed murder, but it doesn’t have the plot to tell it seriously without coming off as some laughable insult to the dark material it’s trying to cover with naively cursory remarks. Kevin Williamson may (the mays and mights keep comin’) have shifted gears away from Scream (1996) successfully, but not with the results we were hoping for to preserve such an infamous yet decaying subgenre.

And… uhh… wow… the twist is like… so metaphorical… and poignant… and ahh… yes… I know… I’m an asshole…

Verdict: D
